Notes:
Estimates are based on 2022 5-year ACS estimates. Because of the small sample size of many ZCTAs, we assessed reliability of ZCTA-level estimates by transforming margins of error into smoothed sampling variances to calculate effective sample sizes and used Bayesian multilevel models to estimate interunit reliability (IUR). ZCTA reliability was defined by IUR as good (>0.75), moderate (0.5–0.75), or poor (<0.5). Poor-reliability ZCTAs were recursively merged with their next largest neighboring ZCTA to form clusters until achieving at least moderate reliability. Merged ZCTAs are mapped independently, but share the same prevalence estimates as other ZCTAs in their cluster.
Measure Definitions:
  • People = The estimated number of US residents who report having the selected indicator, calculated using survey sampling weights. This is the numerator of the percentage value. ZCTA-level estimates are limited to the civilian non-institutionalized population. Responses are provided by the head of household.
  • High Prevalence is defined as ZCTAs at least 1 standard deviation above the national mean prevalence rate.
  • Very High Prevalence is defined as ZCTAs at least 2 standard deviations above the national mean prevalence rate.
